Its job is simple: it holds the tips of your chopsticks up off the cloth between mouthfuls, so they stay clean and do not roll away. It is one of those quiet details that you only notice the absence of. Set one at each place and a meal feels a little more considered, whether you are eating everyday noodles at home or laying the table for guests. It is a modest piece, but it is exactly the kind of small, useful object that a handmade studio does well.

Made by hand in Oxfordshire

Every chopstick rest is made by hand in our Oxfordshire studio. Each one is shaped and finished individually, and we work in small batches rather than pressing out identical copies, so no two are ever exactly the same, and each piece is unique. There is real care in getting a small piece like this right: the shape has to cradle the chopsticks securely, sit steady on the table, and feel resolved in the hand. Doing it by hand, in-house, is what gives these little pieces their character rather than the flat sameness of something moulded by machine.

Shaped for the job

For all that it is small, a chopstick rest has a job to do, and this one is shaped to do it well. The top is formed to hold a pair of chopsticks securely without letting them roll, and the base is judged to sit steady on the table so it does not shift as you use it. It is comfortable to pick up and pleasing to handle, with edges finished smooth. It is the kind of small, considered object that rewards a closer look, because everything about it has been thought through rather than stamped out.

A quiet detail on the table

A piece like this is as much about the feel of a table as it is about function. Set out at each place, a set of rests brings a sense of order and intention to a meal, and they look just as good left out on the table between uses as a small, quiet detail. They sit naturally alongside the rest of the range if you are building a collection, and they are easy to bring out for guests or keep in daily use. They also make an easy way to add a little ceremony to an ordinary weeknight dinner. Small pieces like this are often the ones that quietly make the biggest difference to how a table feels.

Made to last, easy to clean

Handmade does not mean high-maintenance. Each rest is made from stoneware, fired to a high temperature so the clay body becomes dense, hard-wearing and non-porous. That gives even a small piece real durability and a chip-resistant surface that stands up to daily use. It is food safe and dishwasher safe, so it wipes or washes clean in seconds and is ready for the next meal. Everything is tested thoroughly before it leaves the studio, so it is ready to go straight into everyday use.

A thoughtful little gift

Because every rest is made individually rather than mass-produced, it makes a lovely small gift, especially as a set. It carries the mark of the person who made it, from the shaped top to the finish on the base and the small signs of a process that cannot be rushed. Whether it is for someone who loves to cook and eat well, a fan of Japanese and Korean tableware, or simply someone who appreciates a well-made small object, a chopstick rest like this is a thoughtful thing to give, and an easy one to keep.

Please note: as these are handmade objects, they may vary in colour, shape and size from one piece to the next. These variations are not defects. They are celebrated as part of the handmade quality of every piece.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0613/9402/6735/files/Chopstick-rest-cobalt-with-chopsticks.webp?v=1793096984
