Flow Glass

I’m Fiona Cooper and I am the founder and owner of Flow Glass, a studio specialising in fused glass creations located just outside Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands. Our designs draw inspiration from Orkney’s distinctive natural landscapes, reflecting the local sea and beaches. I am the creative maker of the fused glass work.. We aim to produce locally handmade products inspired by our surroundings. Pieces are created using float glass and various techniques such as enamels, bubble effects and coloured frit to enhance the design. Pieces are fired in a kiln to produce fused (Kiln Formed) Glass. The pieces can be fired again at lower temperatures to create curve and bowl forms.

The Orkney environment, especially its coastal scenery, serves as the primary source of inspiration for my work. After perfecting our sand-fusing technique, we have developed several ranges incorporating sand from Scapa Beach, such as the “Orkney,” “Sea & Sand,” and “Ocean” collections. The “Hoy” series captures the silhouette of Hoy at dusk, while the “Ring of Brodgar” range portrays the iconic Neolithic henge set amidst summer heather, with the loch, hills, and expansive sky as backdrop.

Additional ranges showcase local flora—such as cow parsley, daisies, and thistles—found across Orkney during the summer months, and are available as hangings, coasters, dishes, frames, and curved pieces. More recently, we have created designs inspired by sheep grazing near the studio and has also expanded our collection to feature Highland coos.
