Gabrielle Solly Illustration

I create art, stationery and greeting cards using traditional methods of illustration and modern calligraphy; old dip pens, inks, watercolours, crayons, gold and silver metallic paints, Italian and British-made papers. I finish some of the art pieces with tiny touches of pure gold leaf which gently catches the light.

I frame the art in a variety of antique, vintage and contemporary frames. Old frames tell their own stories and I keep original glass, rusty hanging hooks and clips, backing papers where possible. If anything needs replacing, I use our local art shop/framers.

I’m inspired by our natural world and the organic designs of decorative arts. I was very fortunate to have been taught by Quentin Blake who encouraged my flowing style.

I believe in slow craftsmanship, the art of storytelling and taking time to create designs, allowing the process to develop naturally. My work is about celebrating small acts of kindness, gestures of love, appreciation, gratitude and acknowledging different life events by creating heritage pieces to be kept and treasured.
