Stitched on a silk/cotton blend fabric with fine silk floss thread, this hand embroidered cicada has been sewn using a needlepainting technique. The work has been stretched and professionally framed with non reflective glass. An heirloom piece of embroidery.

Silk floss thread on silk/cotton blend fabric with a layer of cellophane stitched into the wings.
While common in many countries cicadetta montana is classified as endangered in the UK and is only found in the New Forest, although the last confirmed sighting was in the early 1990s. The cicada spends much of its life underground as a nymph, taking up to 8 years to mature and hatch. Once hatched the cicada is often high up in the trees out of sight and can only be heard by its high pitched song.
