The most beautiful iolite gemstones were once called water sapphires The larger stones are usually included, giving them unique character, as these are.
Iolite displays pleochroism, meaning that as it moves it reflects light in different colours of violet, blue and grey. Iolite is found in Sri Lanka, Africa, India, Brazil, Norway and Madagascar.
These one-of-a-kind earrings are set in open back handcrafted settings linked by rings to add movement and sparkle as they dangle and allow the light rays to pass through displaying the array of blues.
They are drop earrings with a sterling post and scroll fitting
The gems are 6 x 6mm squares and 12 x 8mm marquise iolites
Among other beliefs, iolite is said to promote pure thoughts, intuition and self-acceptance.
According to legend, iolite was called the Viking Compass Stone. It’s said that thin slices of iolite served as glare-reducers and polarising filters that helped ancient Viking navigators locate the sun on cloudy days. This allowed the Nordic mariners to pinpoint their own location on the seas.
