An early 20th-century ecclesiastical church pew, constructed in stained pine and retaining a number of fascinating details from its original life, including the black stencilled number ‘16’ to one end.

At just over 2.5 metres long, this is a substantial piece with fantastic presence. The tall shaped end supports have rounded finials and gently curved profiles, framing a long back with inset vertical panelled sections. A broad solid pine seat runs the full length, supported at the centre as well as at either end.

What particularly sets this pew apart are its surviving ecclesiastical fittings. To the rear is a narrow shelf fitted with a pair of shallow metal dishes, believed to have been used for coins or church offerings. There is also an unusual brass rail or loop fitted to one end, apparently associated with the pew's original church use. We've left these fascinating old fittings exactly as we found them.

Even underneath there is another lovely detail: the end and central supports terminate in a series of curious small rounded 'button' feet, easily overlooked, but a rather charming feature of its construction.

With considerably more personality than the average church pew, it works brilliantly in a home interior. At only 47cm deep, it's remarkably shallow for such a substantial piece of seating and would be fabulous in a large hallway or boot room, along one side of a country kitchen table, in a garden room, or as statement seating in a pub, restaurant or commercial interior.

Condition: Good antique condition with age-related marks, knocks and wear consistent with many years of use. Structurally sound and sturdy.
