A fabulously decorative early 20th-century Art Deco ‘Cristal’ stove by Deville & Cie of Charleville, France, dating to around 1920.

Made from cast iron with a rich deep brownish burgundy enamelled finish, the stove has an architectural design typical of the emerging Art Deco period. Strong geometric moulding runs throughout, from the faceted side columns and stepped base to the distinctive domed upper sections.

The front is dominated by an arched glazed lattice door, with diamond-shaped panes allowing the fire to be seen within. The door opens to reveal the original cast-iron fire basket and interior, while above is a hinged and adjustable vent bearing the Deville Charleville name.

Below the firebox is the ash drawer with its original decorative handle and ventilation controls, while the shaped geometric plinth completes the design.

The combination of glossy burgundy enamel, dark cast iron and original metal fittings gives this little stove enormous character. At just 60cm high it is relatively compact, but visually it has tremendous presence - as much a piece of French Art Deco design as a practical piece of heating history.
