Pair of Large 19th Century Painted Pine Architectural Corbels on Pilaster Backboards

A striking pair of 19th century architectural salvage elements, featuring richly hand-carved acanthus corbels mounted on substantial pilaster backboards, all retaining a beautifully weathered painted finish developed over many decades.

Crafted in softwood, most likely pine, these impressive pieces display bold scrolling acanthus leaves, floral motifs and classical detailing characteristic of Victorian architectural ornament. The mellow layers of historic paint and subtle variation in colour between the two pieces add to their authenticity and character, telling the story of a long working life within a grand interior.

Standing an impressive 265cm high, they offer endless possibilities for interior designers, restorers and collectors of architectural salvage. Equally suited to flanking a doorway, framing a fireplace, creating a dramatic feature wall or serving as sculptural decorative elements in their own right, they bring instant architectural presence and a sense of permanence to a space.

The deeply carved corbels remain the focal point, displaying excellent craftsmanship and the confident, exuberant styling associated with Victorian decorative architecture. Increasingly difficult to source in matching pairs and of this scale, they would make a superb addition to a period property, country house, boutique hotel, restaurant or design project.
