A simple tool that does one job well
Some of the best kitchen tools are the simplest, and a ceramic garlic grater is a good example. It is a small, shallow dish with a ring of raised teeth in the base. Press a clove of garlic against the teeth and work it in a small circle, and it breaks down into a fine paste straight into the dish, ready to tip into whatever you are cooking. It handles ginger, chilli and hard spices just as well. There is no gadget to assemble, nothing electrical and nothing awkward to store. It just sits in the kitchen and earns its keep every time you cook.
Thrown and finished by hand in Oxfordshire
Every grater is made by hand in our Oxfordshire studio. The dish is shaped and finished individually, and the teeth are formed so they are sharp enough to grate cleanly yet hard-wearing enough to keep doing it for years. We work in small batches rather than pressing out identical pieces, so no two are ever exactly the same, and each piece is unique. Doing it by hand, in-house, is how we make sure the teeth are properly effective and the dish is a pleasure to use, rather than the flat, blunt feel of a mass-produced version.
How the grater works
Using it is straightforward and quickly becomes second nature. Hold the dish steady, press a peeled clove onto the raised teeth and move it in small circles, and the garlic grates down into a paste with barely any effort. The shallow well catches everything so nothing is wasted, and you can add a little oil or lemon straight into the dish to lift it all out. Because the paste is so fine, a little goes further and the flavour spreads more evenly through a dish than roughly chopped garlic ever does. It keeps your hands cleaner than a knife and board, and there is far less to wash up afterwards. It is one of those tools that changes how you cook without you really noticing.
From worktop to table
This is a piece made to live out on the worktop rather than buried in a drawer. It is small enough to leave beside the hob within easy reach, and finished well enough to bring straight to the table for grating over a finished plate. It works as a little dish in its own right too, for a pool of oil and balsamic, a few olives or a pinch of salt. Left out on the side, it looks like a considered piece of tableware rather than a kitchen gadget, which is exactly the point.
Made to last, easy to clean
Handmade does not mean high-maintenance. Each grater is made from stoneware, fired to a high temperature so the clay body becomes dense, hard-wearing and non-porous. That gives it real durability and a chip-resistant surface, and the teeth keep their bite through years of regular use. It is food safe and dishwasher safe, though a quick scrub with a brush under the tap clears the teeth in seconds. Everything is tested thoroughly before it leaves the studio, so it is ready to go straight into daily use in the kitchen.
A useful handmade gift for cooks
Because every grater is made individually rather than mass-produced, it makes a genuinely useful gift, especially for anyone who likes to cook. It carries the mark of the person who made it, from the formed teeth to the finish on the dish and the small signs of a process that cannot be rushed. Whether it is for a keen cook, someone setting up a kitchen, or simply someone who appreciates a well-made everyday tool, a garlic grater like this is a thoughtful thing to give, and an easy one to treat yourself to.
Please note: as these are handmade objects, they may vary in colour, shape and size from one piece to the next. These variations are not defects. They are celebrated as part of the handmade quality of every piece.
