Jade Celadon Wonky Matcha Cup — Handmade Stoneware by Brooker Ceramics
A wonky matcha cup rooted in wabi-sabi tradition, where asymmetry becomes meditation. This handmade piece from Brooker Ceramics in Oxfordshire celebrates imperfection through its lopsided walls, hand-carved textured foot, and interior throwing rings that record the maker's touch. The jade celadon finish holds depth and quietness, inviting you to slow down. This is functional ware for your daily tea ritual, equally deserving a place on display where it speaks to the authentic beauty of handmade form.
Form & Character
The wonky matcha cup holds an intentional lopsidedness that distinguishes it from the precision of mass-made forms. Its asymmetrical rim and bulging walls create subtle variations with each rotation on the wheel. No two sides are exactly the same. The hand-carved textured foot grounds the piece with tactile presence, inviting you to hold and turn it in your hands. Inside, throwing rings circle the inner surface, a living record of the maker's touch that catches light when the cup is held to your lips. This is not a cup masking its making. It announces itself as handmade. In a space, it earns its place on display. A small sculpture that happens to hold tea.
Made for the Table. Built for Display.
Your wonky matcha cup lives in two worlds. At the table, it becomes part of your morning ritual. Warm in your hands, its asymmetry encourages intentional holding. The jade celadon surface deepens with use, each subtle marking and micro-scratch adding character to a piece built to be lived with daily. And yet it's equally at home on display. Positioned on your shelf or beside the window, it becomes sculptural. A quiet statement of handmade craft that grounds a room's aesthetic and conversations. Many of our customers say they keep their cup in view always, switching between tea-drinking and display. It's a piece that deserves both uses.
Handcrafted in Oxfordshire
Every wonky matcha cup is thrown by hand from stoneware clay on the wheel at Brooker Ceramics studio in rural Oxfordshire. The maker deliberately shapes the walls off-center with intention, creating the characteristic asymmetry that defines the piece. After throwing, the foot is hand-carved with deliberate precision, and decorative texture is incised into the surface by hand. The piece is then fired to high temperature in an electric kiln using oxidation firing. This process develops the jade celadon colour and hardens the clay to permanent density. No two wonky matcha cups are exactly alike. Each one carries the fingerprint of its making moment, with variations in wall thickness and rim shape that confirm its handmade origin. This transparency is central to Brooker Ceramics.
Quality & Care
The jade celadon surface is food-safe and fully waterproof, making this cup suitable for daily use. Stoneware fired to high temperature becomes exceptionally dense and durable. Your wonky matcha cup is chip resistant and built to last. It's dishwasher safe for convenience, though hand-washing will preserve the subtle surface character over years. Whether you drink tea or cold water, this piece handles everyday life with grace. The textured areas may gather subtle stains with time. A natural patina of use that many find beautiful.
About Brooker Ceramics
Brooker Ceramics is a handcrafted studio in Oxfordshire creating functional ware and sculptural ceramics. For over a decade, the maker has been exploring the intersection between utility and art, making pieces that live on your table and command attention on display. Each cup, bowl, and vase is thrown by hand, finished by hand, and fired with care. Brooker Ceramics shares this practice openly. The studio has a community of over 25,000 on YouTube who follow the making process from clay to kiln. Every piece carries the philosophy that handmade objects deserve a place in everyday life.
Handmade, so there may be variations in shape and glaze.
