A little pot for miniature trees
A mame pot is a home for the smallest of bonsai and tiny accent plantings. This one is made for exactly that: a small, well-proportioned pot that sets off a miniature tree, a little succulent or a sprig of accent planting and gives it somewhere considered to grow. Mame bonsai are the tiniest category of bonsai, and the pot is as much a part of the display as the tree itself, so it is worth having one that is made with real care. It is a small piece, but it turns a little plant into a proper miniature landscape.
Handmade in our Oxfordshire studio
Every mame pot is made by hand in our Oxfordshire studio. Each one is shaped and finished individually, and we work in small batches rather than pressing out identical copies, so no two are ever exactly the same, and each piece is unique. There is real care in getting a small pot like this right: the proportions have to flatter a tiny tree, the walls have to be even, and the whole thing has to feel resolved and sit steady. Doing it by hand, in-house, is what gives these little pots their character rather than the flat sameness of something moulded by machine.
Made for healthy roots
This is a pot shaped around what it needs to do. It has a practical drainage hole so excess water can escape and the roots do not sit waterlogged, which is exactly what a healthy miniature planting needs. The proportions give a small tree enough room without swamping it, and the base is judged to sit steady on a shelf, sill or display table. The finish is chosen to set off the greenery rather than compete with it. It is a small, considered object made to support a living thing, not just to look the part. Everything about it is judged around the health of the roots and the display of the tree it will hold.
Made to be displayed
A mame pot is made to be seen. Stood on a windowsill, a shelf, a plant stand or a display table, it turns a tiny tree into a little scene, and it looks just as good as part of a group if you keep more than one planting. It suits enthusiasts building a collection and beginners planting their first mame alike, and it sits naturally alongside the rest of the range. Even between plantings it is a characterful little object to have around. Small pieces like this are often the ones that quietly bring the most pleasure day to day.
Made to last, high-fired and durable
Handmade does not mean high-maintenance. This pot is made from stoneware, fired to a high temperature so the clay body becomes dense, hard-wearing and non-porous. That gives it real durability and a chip-resistant surface that stands up to potting, watering and handling. It is made to hold up to regular use with a living planting, and it is easily rinsed clean when you come to repot. Everything is tested thoroughly before it leaves the studio. As with any handmade ceramic, it is best not left out in hard frost, so bring it under cover in the coldest weather.
A thoughtful gift for plant lovers
Because every mame pot is made individually rather than mass-produced, it makes a lovely gift, especially for anyone who loves bonsai, houseplants or growing small things. It carries the mark of the person who made it, from the shape of the walls to the finish on the surface and the small signs of a process that cannot be rushed. Whether it is for a keen grower, someone just getting into bonsai, or simply someone who appreciates a well-made little object, a mame pot like this is a thoughtful thing to give, and an easy one to keep.
Please note: as these are handmade objects, they may vary in colour, shape and size from one piece to the next. These variations are not defects. They are celebrated as part of the handmade quality of every piece.
