Handcrafted stoneware, made in Oxfordshire
Every piece in this matcha set is thrown, glazed and fired by hand in our Oxfordshire studio, where traditional pottery meets a considered, contemporary approach to design. We work in small batches rather than mass production, shaping the bowl and its cups on the wheel before they are trimmed, dried, bisque fired, glazed and fired again at a high stoneware temperature. A matcha set has to feel like a set, so the bowl and cups are made together and finished by hand to sit as a family. Doing every stage in-house is how we hold that standard, rather than relying on shortcuts that speed up production but flatten the character out of the finished pieces.
Small-batch glazing, so every piece is unique
Because we make and glaze in small batches, no two sets are ever perfectly identical. Glaze is a living material. It moves, pools and settles differently depending on how it is applied and exactly where each piece sits in the kiln during firing. Rather than engineer those variations out, we lean into them, so each piece is unique. Small shifts in tone, texture and pattern are part of what makes handmade ceramics feel different to hold and use than anything mass-produced. When you choose a set from this collection, you are choosing the one version of it that exists, made by hand and never quite the same as any other.
A bowl shaped for the matcha ritual
A matcha bowl is shaped by its purpose. The wide, shallow form gives the whisk room to move freely, so the powder and water come together into a smooth, even cream. Everything about the form follows the ritual, from the depth that keeps the matcha warm to the generous width that makes whisking feel unhurried. The bowl sits stable in the hand, neither too heavy nor too slight, and the matching cups are trimmed with a deliberate lightness so they feel comfortable to hold and pour from. This is a set made to bring a little intention to the everyday, whether you prepare matcha as part of a morning routine or serve tea slowly for guests.
Made for the table, built for display
The set lives at the threshold between use and display. In use, the bowl steadies your movement while you whisk, and the cups are ready to pour and share. At rest, the pieces earn their place on display rather than being tucked away in a cupboard. Kept together, the bowl and cups make a quiet, considered arrangement on a kitchen counter or a tea tray, ready to be lifted down whenever the moment calls for it. Stoneware is prized by potters because it is fired at a high temperature until the clay body becomes dense, hard-wearing and non-porous, which gives each piece real durability. The high firing also fuses the glaze properly to the clay, creating a chip-resistant surface that stands up to regular handling far better than lower-fired earthenware.
Practical care, everyday performance
Handmade does not mean high-maintenance. Every piece in this set is dishwasher safe, microwave safe and food safe, so it can be part of your daily routine. We do recommend handwashing now and then to preserve the depth of the glaze over the years, but the stoneware is strong enough for regular whisking and daily tea. Our glazes are tested thoroughly before they go into production, so you can use the set with confidence rather than saving it for best.
A considered gift for the tea ritual
Because every set is made individually rather than mass-produced, giving one as a gift feels different too. It carries the mark of the person who made it, from the slight variations in the glaze to the way each piece sits in the hand and the small evidence of a process that cannot be rushed. Whether it is for someone who already loves the matcha ritual or someone ready to begin one, a set from this collection makes a genuinely thoughtful gift, or an equally good treat for your own table.
Please note: as these are handmade objects, they may vary in colour, shape and size from one piece to the next. These variations are not defects. They are celebrated as part of the handmade quality of every piece.
