A mug made for everyday use
This is a mug made to be reached for. Not kept back for best, not left on display untouched, but picked up first thing in the morning and used all day. The form is judged for exactly that. It holds a proper amount so you are not forever topping it up, it sits steady on a desk or a worktop, and it feels balanced whether it is full to the brim or down to the last mouthful. A mug is one of the most-used objects in any home, so it is worth having one that actually feels good to hold. That is what this one is designed to do.
Thrown and finished by hand in Oxfordshire
Every mug is thrown, trimmed and finished by hand in our Oxfordshire studio. We work in small batches on the wheel rather than pressing out identical shapes by machine, so each mug is shaped, turned and finished individually before it is fired. That hands-on process is why no two are ever exactly the same, and why each piece is unique. It is a slower way of working, but it is the only way to get a mug with real presence in the hand rather than the flat, weightless feel of something mass-produced. From the first pull of clay on the wheel to the last check before it leaves the studio, every stage is done in-house.
The handle, and the way it sits in your hand
A lot of a mug comes down to the handle. Get it wrong and the mug is a chore to use. We shape and attach every handle by hand so it holds your fingers securely and takes the weight comfortably, whether you hook a single finger through it or wrap your whole hand around the body for warmth. The rim is finished to feel smooth and clean against your lip, and the walls are kept an even thickness so the mug warms in the hand without ever being too hot to hold. These are small things, but they are the difference between a mug you love and one that lives at the back of the cupboard.
As good on the table as it is on display
Good tableware earns its place twice over. In use, this mug is a genuine everyday workhorse for coffee, tea, hot chocolate or a quiet drink at your desk. At rest, it is a piece worth looking at, so it can sit out on the side or on display rather than being hidden away. It pairs naturally with the rest of the range if you are slowly building a set, and it looks just as at home on its own. Wherever it ends up, it brings a little of the handmade into an ordinary daily routine, which is exactly what we think functional ceramics should do.
Made to last, easy to live with
Handmade does not mean high-maintenance. This mug is made from stoneware, fired to a high temperature so the clay body becomes dense, hard-wearing and non-porous. That gives it real durability for daily use and a chip-resistant surface that stands up to being washed, stacked and used again day after day. It is dishwasher safe, microwave safe and food safe, so you can use it exactly as you would any everyday mug, and we test everything thoroughly before it leaves the studio so you can reach for it without a second thought.
A handmade gift that gets used
Because every mug is made individually rather than churned out in a factory, it makes a genuinely good gift. It carries the mark of the person who made it, from the shape of the handle to the weight in the hand and the small signs of a process that cannot be rushed. Whether it is for a coffee lover, a tea drinker, someone setting up a first home or simply someone who appreciates things made with care, a mug like this is a thoughtful thing to give, and an easy thing to treat yourself to as well.
Please note: as these are handmade objects, they may vary in colour, shape and size from one piece to the next. These variations are not defects. They are celebrated as part of the handmade quality of every piece.
