A little bowl for dips and sauces
A sauce bowl is a small thing that quietly makes a meal better. Its whole job is to give a dip, a dressing or a dab of condiment a proper home, so soy sauce, sweet chilli, hummus, oil and balsamic, ketchup or a spoonful of chutney all have somewhere to sit rather than being smeared across the side of a plate. Set one beside a plate of dumplings, spring rolls, sushi or warm bread and it turns a simple spread into something that feels considered. It is the kind of small, useful piece that you reach for far more often than you would expect once you have one to hand.
Thrown and finished by hand in Oxfordshire
Every bowl is thrown, trimmed and finished by hand in our Oxfordshire studio. We work in small batches on the wheel, shaping and finishing each one individually rather than pressing out identical copies, so no two are ever exactly the same, and each piece is unique. A small bowl is deceptively tricky to get right: the curve of the wall, the little foot and the rim all have to be judged by hand so it feels balanced and resolved rather than thick and clumsy at this size. Doing every stage in-house is how we hold that standard rather than relying on shortcuts that speed things up but flatten the character out of the finished piece.
Small, but properly made
So much of how a little bowl works comes down to details you only notice in use. The rim is finished smooth so it is clean to dip into and easy to wipe a piece of bread around, the walls are shaped to hold a useful amount without the sauce spreading too thin, and the foot is trimmed so it sits steady on the table and does not tip when you dunk into it. It is light enough to pass around and pick up easily, yet weighted so it stays put. These are small things, but on a piece this size they are the difference between a bowl you keep reaching for and one that stays in the cupboard.
As good on the table as it is on display
Good tableware earns its place twice over. In use, this is a genuine everyday piece for dips, sauces, condiments and small servings, and a set of them is perfect for a grazing table, a spread of small plates, or laying out a few dips for guests. It is just as handy in the kitchen for prep, holding a measured pinch of salt, spices or chopped garlic while you cook. At rest, it is a piece worth looking at, so it can sit out on display rather than being hidden away, and it stacks neatly with others as you build up a set. It pairs naturally with the rest of the range, and it brings a little of the handmade into an ordinary daily routine.
Made to last, easy to live with
Handmade does not mean high-maintenance. This bowl is made from stoneware, fired to a high temperature so the clay body becomes dense, hard-wearing and non-porous. That gives it real durability for daily use and a chip-resistant surface that stands up to being dipped into, washed and used again day after day. It is dishwasher safe, microwave safe and food safe, so you can warm a little sauce in it or send it straight through the dishwasher without a second thought, and everything is tested thoroughly before it leaves the studio.
A handmade gift that gets used
Because every bowl is made individually rather than mass-produced, it makes a genuinely good gift, especially as a set of two or more. It carries the mark of the person who made it, from the curve of the wall to the weight in the hand and the small signs of a process that cannot be rushed. Whether it is for a keen cook, someone who loves to host, or simply someone who appreciates things made with care, a little bowl like this is a thoughtful thing to give, and an easy thing to treat yourself to as well.
Please note: as these are handmade objects, they may vary in colour, shape and size from one piece to the next. These variations are not defects. They are celebrated as part of the handmade quality of every piece. without the sauce spreading too thin, and the foot is trimmed so it sits steady on the table and does not tip when you dunk into it.
