Winterwood Wonky Matcha Cup — Handmade Stoneware by Brooker Ceramics
This wonky matcha cup takes inspiration from the Japanese chawan tradition, where form speaks louder than perfection. Its wobbly walls and off-centre character embrace wabi-sabi. The piece is equally at home cradling morning tea at your table or standing alone on display. Thrown by hand in Oxfordshire stoneware with a matte winterwood finish, it deepens any space it occupies. No two are exactly alike.
Form & Character
Each curve of this cup's wobbly walls has been intentionally off. A celebration of the hand that made it. The carved foot grounds the form, anchoring it on any surface. This is not symmetry for symmetry's sake. Instead, you're holding a piece that leans into imperfection with confidence. In a room full of machine-made goods, wonky walls read as honesty. The form speaks to wabi-sabi principles. Whether it's on display or at your table, it earns its place through character alone. Pour whatever you wish inside. The cup will hold it with quiet presence.
Made for the Table. Built for Display.
At the table, this cup becomes a daily ritual. Your hand wraps around its wobbly form, feeling the weight and warmth of stoneware. The wonky walls sit comfortably in your palm. It works beautifully for matcha, tea, or coffee. Beyond the table, the piece stands on its own as sculpture. When positioned on display, the carved foot, matte surface, and off-kilter character command attention. Many owners find this wonky cup earns the best light in their room. It stands on display with quiet presence. This is the handmade piece that doesn't hide. It wants to be seen and used.
Handcrafted in Oxfordshire
Brooker Ceramics is based in Oxfordshire, where each piece is thrown by hand on the wheel and finished by the maker. The wobbly walls of this cup are intentional. The off-centre form is not an accident. It's a choice rooted in wabi-sabi. The carved foot is cut and shaped by hand. Every cup is unique. No two pieces are exactly alike. The stoneware is mixed, thrown, trimmed, and fired in the studio's kiln using oxidation firing. You're holding the result of a single maker's attention and intention. Brooker Ceramics works transparently. You know where this cup comes from and who shaped it.
Quality & Care
The matte surface is food-safe and waterproof, fired to high temperature until the stoneware becomes dense and chip-resistant. Built for everyday use, this cup can go in the dishwasher if you prefer, though hand-washing extends its life. The surface develops character with use. Over time, it may show signs of daily living. This is not a flaw. It's evidence of use, part of the piece's journey. The winterwood finish complements the wonky form. Your cup is designed to be lived with, not stored away.
