Wonky Soft Blue Chawan Cup — Handmade Stoneware by Brooker Ceramics
This wonky chawan cup steps outside the lines of ceramic tradition. Japanese tea bowls are designed to be held in both hands, turned slowly, appreciated for their imperfect beauty. The chawan form invites ritual and presence. This soft blue stoneware version sits equally at home cradling your morning tea on the kitchen table or catching afternoon light on a shelf. It's a piece that works as it looks.
Form & Character
The chawan silhouette is instantly recognizable. It has a rounded body, a tall foot, a gentle curve that fits the palm. This version embraces wabi sabi, the Japanese aesthetic of beautiful imperfection. The walls aren't perfectly even. The rim isn't perfectly level. These irregularities aren't flaws. They're evidence of the hand that threw the piece, of the moment when the clay moved in an unexpected direction. That moment lives in the finished piece. You'll notice it when you hold the cup. The tall foot lifts the body above the surface, grounding the form and making the walls appear to float slightly. It's sculptural. It earns its place on display.
Made for the Table. Built for Display.
Hold the chawan warm in your hands during your morning tea. The soft blue catches light as you lift it to drink. This ritual is where the piece finds its purpose. But the cup keeps working when you set it down. It holds the room. The wonky walls read differently from each angle. The tall foot creates shadow and depth. On open shelving or cabinet, it earns its place. Many collectors rotate pieces between table and display across seasons. That flexibility is chawan tradition. It's made to be held and lived with. You decide when it's which.
Handcrafted in Oxfordshire
Every chawan cup is thrown by hand on the wheel in our Oxfordshire studio. The tall foot, the wonky walls, the rim variations all emerge as the clay spins and the maker responds to its movement. No two pieces are exactly alike. That's not chance. It's the signature of handmade work. The maker shapes each cup individually from clay body through high-temperature electric firing. The stoneware hardens to durability. Every cup carries the imprint of that moment of creation. You're buying not just an object, but the story of its making. That's what Brooker Ceramics stands for.
Quality & Care
The surface is food-safe and waterproof, fired to high temperature to create a dense, durable stoneware. Chip resistant by nature. The cup is suitable for everyday use. Hot tea, cold water, whatever your routine demands. Hand-wash if you prefer, though it's also dishwasher safe. Over time and with use, the surface may develop a gentle patina. That's part of the charm. This is a working piece, not a museum object. It improves with life.
