Wonky Soft Blue Matcha Cup — Handmade Stoneware by Brooker Ceramics
This handmade stoneware matcha cup arrives as a functional companion and a piece that earns its place on display. Its wonky walls and hand-carved foot speak to wabi sabi — the Japanese aesthetic of beauty in imperfection. Thrown by hand in Oxfordshire and fired to high temperature, this stoneware cup is made for daily tea ritual and moments when you want your table to feel more considered. The soft blue surface sits calm and understated in any space. No two the same.
Form & Character
The wonky matcha cup defies symmetry with intention. Its asymmetrical walls and hand-carved foot are hallmarks of wabi sabi ceramics — a tradition that celebrates imperfection and the lived-in. The cup tilts slightly, rims uneven, inviting your hand. The form reads as sculptural and intimate in a space. Holding it becomes a moment of pause. The soft blue surface responds to light across each facet, warm where your fingers meet clay. You feel the maker's touch in the unevenness, in the deliberate irregularity that makes this cup distinctly handmade. It changes how you see a shelf when it sits there.
Made for the Table. Built for Display.
This matcha cup lives at the intersection of function and presence. Pour your morning tea into it; hold the hand-carved foot in your palm. The wonky walls keep the liquid warm. The soft blue surface draws your eye. Later, when the cup sits on a shelf, it anchors the moment. You can live with this piece daily and watch it earn its place on display. The wabi sabi character — the irregularities, the handmade evidence — means it looks more beautiful the more you use it. This is a cup that grows with your space, that becomes part of how your room feels. It's made for both the table and for being seen.
Handcrafted in Oxfordshire
Every wonky matcha cup is thrown by hand at Brooker Ceramics in Oxfordshire. The maker spins the form on the wheel, then carves the foot by hand, introducing the asymmetrical walls that define wabi sabi character. The cup is fired in an electric kiln to high temperature, transforming raw clay into dense, durable stoneware. This firing brings out the depth of the soft blue surface and locks in the piece's strength. Because every cup is hand-thrown, no two are the same. Slight variations in wall thickness, in the rim angle, in the hand-carved foot — these are proof of the maker's hand. They are what make this a handcrafted piece. Imperfection is intention.
Quality & Care
The surface is fired to high temperature, making the stoneware dense, non-porous, and chip resistant. It is food-safe and waterproof, suitable for daily use with tea, coffee, or any hot or cold liquid. The piece can be washed by hand or placed in the dishwasher, though hand-washing is recommended to protect the soft blue surface and celebrate the handmade quality. Because this is a handcrafted cup, treat it with care as you would any functional artwork. It will age beautifully with use, marks and patina becoming part of its story.
